Our Wildlife Rescue

Since 2017, Little Mittens has been permitted for wildlife rehabilitation. We now hold both a Federal Migratory Bird Permit and a Provincial General Wildlife Permit. These permits allow us to rescue and rehabilitate all types of wildlife in BC – from songbirds to eagles and squirrels to elk.

While we are located in Golden, we rescue wildlife throughout the Kootenays, Slocan Valley, Elk Valley, Columbia Valley, and Revelstoke areas!

“What do I do when I see an injured or orphaned animal?

1. Make sure the animal is not in immediate danger. If it is safe to do so, move it out of the middle of the road or into the shade if it is hot out. You may put a shallow dish of water near it but DO NOT attempt to drop water into its mouth or feed it.

2. BEFORE taking any further action, please call us at 250-939-8085 – we will ask you questions to help determine next steps. Sometimes an animal may appear to be orphaned or in distress when it may actually be displaying normal behaviour! If we don’t answer, leave a message and be patient.. we are likely busy caring for an animal.

3. We will walk you through next steps and reach out to the volunteers in your area.

If you see a deer, elk, moose, or bear in trouble, call the BC Conservation Officer Service RAPP line in addition to calling us – we work closely with them and need their approval in order to help with these animals!
